Murals & Illustration

This January I had the opportunity to rock a mural in the very large bathroom (in two days) at the Hive gallery. It is very hard to photograph a bathroom so here’s what I could muster.  The painting is really best enjoyed in it’s natural surroundings.

I spent all summer of 08′ rocking out 5 floors of the Boutique apartments. The project started off with a bunch of graffiti & urban artists from the denver area having really a free-for all on the inside of a 13 story apartment building. After a couple floors and the administration decided it was a little ‘too-busy’ and a bunch of us were let go. I got to stay however and me, Sam Sutton & Audrey Mcnamera got to do the whole building ourselves!! What was done before was buffed which was really sad but we all got floors to ourselves so whatever. I’m a bit of a futurist so I did’nt mind. Their big murals in a really narrow hall so they’re a real bitch to photograph. I did what I could so enjoy!!!

I had a about a week to get each full floor done

I did this commissioned mural of ‘The Million Dollar Quartet’ for a very nice guy named Justin Yurek. The million dollar quartet was the one time all the big names from sun records (elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins & Johnny Cash) came together and recored a session.  This big boy is done on a 8×10′ streched canvas and had to be taken apart and re-stretched in the guy’s house for installation. This flick is from my living room when it was about 3/4 done.

Right after I got my degree in 03′ I got a children’s book deal. I thought I was well on my way to becoming a famous children’s book illustrator but unfortunately it never got published and I evetually decided fine art was way more fun.

The title of the book is ‘Who’s driving you’ written by Linda Silvestri. The story is about seven characters which are really manifestations of typically negative emotional states. Each chapter has a different emotion character taking hold of the two main characters and making them do all sorts of hairbrain stuff. My challenge was to bring to life these emotional states and figure out how they get into our heads. There’s a couple samples below and you can see all the illustrations at the link under the samples.
